Much is made of the Spring Detox, where someone goes on a special diet and drinks special mixtures and juices in the Spring, in an effort to purge themselves of the toxins that have built up in the body since the previous Spring. As helpful as this is, many holistic health practitioners, feel that detoxifying the body shouldn’t be just a yearly or quarterly event. It is something that should be part of our everyday lives.
Where do Toxins Come From?
The chemicals and preservatives in processed foods play a huge role in deteriorating the body function by introducing chemicals to the body that it has difficulty eliminating. These chemicals can be stored in the body for years causing many of the body’s organs to malfunction and cause acute and chronic illnesses.
Just the act of breathing, and performing basic functions creates unwanted toxins in the body. Additionally, there are environmental influences that create toxicity. If you live in a suburban or urban area the very air you breath or your drinking water can be detrimental to your health over time.

What’s to be done?
So, what can you do to prevent illnesses from toxicity? Well, don’t worry. You don’t have to live on the top of a mountain and eat only bean sprouts and water. A balanced diet, low in processed foods and consistent exercise is the backbone of any wellness regime. Not only does this combination nourish and strengthen the body, it’s also an ideal way to avoid many of the harmful toxins that can deteriorate your health.
To give it an extra push, consuming detoxifying foods on a daily or weekly basis, can give the body a regular power wash to minimize the effects of harmful pollutants in the body. Drinking warm lemon water is an easy, gentle, and effective way to cleanse the body’s systems.
How should I drink it?
- Add the juice and pulp of 1/2 lemon (about 2 tablespoons) to 12 ounces of warm water (about 110*F).
- Drink this first thing in the morning before eating. Don’t eat anything for another 30 minutes.
How often?
If this is your first time trying a detox program, try this every day for 7 days. The intensity of this regime will allow the body to flush out old toxins and start the process of strengthening the organs. See how you feel at the end of the week. Continue the same regime if things are going well. Although, I wouldn’t suggest more than 10 days consistently. The body needs time to recover. Take a day or two off and continue the regime. After a couple of weeks, you can lessen the frequency.
If you already have a good eating and exercise routine, try drinking lemon water 3 to 4 time a week. Remember, consistency is the key. One of the reasons most people don’t achieve the results they desire is down to inconsistency. Be sure to make it a habit. Remember, just because you don’t notice results right away doesn’t mean it’s not working. Results won’t come in a day -perhaps not even in a week. But if you keep to the process, you’ll be able to see distinct changes in your overall physical and mental wellbeing.

Listen to your body. If you are feeling the urge to have more or less -follow that urge. Assess how you feel. Then adjust the program to suit you. Learning to listening to your body and supporting it’s needs is essential for your good health.
How does lemon water work?
- lemons are high in pectin, a kind of fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut.
- lemon water helps eliminate fat from the liver allowing it to eliminate waste more efficiently.
- studies that show consuming lemon juice can help to protect the kidneys against kidney stones.
- lemons are full of phytonutrients and antioxidants.
- studies have shown that drinking lemon juice can help lower blood pressure.
How will I feel?
As a result of regularly drinking lemon water, you can experience:
- better digestion
- clearer skin
- increased energy
- more efficient immune function
- weight loss
- energetically, a brighter- lighter feeling
So, give it a try. This is one of the most gentle detox processes, which is suitable for almost everyone. But remember to consult your health practitioner before starting any health regimen.
